USCG Cordova Housing

CordovaThe USCG Family Housing project in Cordova, Alaska consists of 13 duplexes or 26 living units. Due to the high cost of energy in Cordova, the project team decided to utilize the LEED for Homes standard, targeting Silver Certification as the minimum.

The project was designed by Bezek Durst & Seiser and constructed by Eagle Contracting and Bethel Services. Each duplex features a tight envelope, panelized exterior walls with rigid insulation, high performance windows and ENERGY STAR equipment. The duplexes are heated using concrete radiant floor slabs, with continuous circulated outside air for fresh air ventilation, preheated through a heat recovery ventilator. All water fixtures are low flow and the toilets are ultra low flush. Interior lights are compact florescent lights and exterior lighting is LED.

O'Brien & Company provided the LEED project management, technical assistance, field services/testing and was the LEED for Homes Provider.  The duplexes were awarded LEED Homes Silver certification in December 2010.

The USCG reports that the electric bill for the new duplexes was dramatically reduced by 62%, and that the families living in the units have had nothing but praise for their new homes.
