Enterprise Community Partners offers technical resources and training grants for affordable housing communities. In 2010 O’Brien & Company developed a suite of customizable engagement tools to educate and inspire affordable housing residents about green features in their buildings; how to sustainably operate and maintain their homes; and how to make healthy lifestyle choices.
The product development process involved several focus groups and a workshop with potential end-users. O’Brien & Company also collaborated with the Enterprise Team, targeted stakeholder representatives and an outside illustrator.
The primary tool is a set of Resident Engagement Card templates, developed in Power Point. The template cards cover six broad categories of sustainable living and home maintenance and operation. Each card includes simple tips and suggested actions with lively graphics and illustrations, with prompts for how users can customize the content to fit different audiences and affordable housing properties, along with ideas for how to implement the cards. Cards may be printed (for building signage, event handouts, or bound as a new resident handbook), delivered as a PowerPoint presentation, or used as part of resident engagement activities.
O’Brien & Company piloted the process of customizing the cards with an affordable housing organization in Los Angeles. to customize a set of cards to be used across the organization as well as at a specific housing development.
The final package, available for free on the Enterprise Community Partners web site, includes the Resident Engagement Cards and several companion tools including a User Guide, a short tutorial video, a video highlighting some of the universal key concepts covered in the cards, quiz question templates, and an image library with over 30 fun illustrations that could be used in engagement materials and activities.
